We thought we'd celebrate our 100th edition by asking The Gaffer to look back over the club's seven season existence. Gaffer, the club was formed when the Evolution League came into being in Season 33. What can you remember about those early days?
"Well, that first season was a bit of a mystery and to be honest I didn't really know what I was doing. The whole 'Olmec' concept was alien to me so Season 33 was a huge learning experience. I don't think I was quite half-way through that initial season before I realised that I'd made errors with my initial squad pick and my coaching plan was wrong. I tried a number of formations which didn't appear to be working and it was only in the latter quarter of the season that I thought that I was getting the hang of things. Fortunately, we put a few late results together and avoided relegation but in hindsight if I could replay Season 33, then I'd do things very differently!"
Yes, that initial season was a bit traumatic with many of The Bears howling for your head!
"Aye, it wasn't pleasant, especially early on. Things improved through Season 34 and by Season 35 I was much happier with the squad and more confident that we could make a positive impact."
Well, you certainly made an impact, Gaffer. The Gers lifted their first trophy in Season 35!
"Aye, that was a great moment for the club. The Manager Cup has always been a great favourite with me, so to actually win it was beyond my expectations."
You said that the 'Olmec' concept was alien to you. What difficulties did you experience?
"Well, I'd played football management games for many years, but mainly those whose MRPs were based on mathematical formulae. Chance played only a minor part in determining match outcomes, so to become involved in a game where chance played a significant role was a major cultural shock. It took me quite a while to come to terms with the fact that your team could have all the stats significantly in their favour but lose badly!"
Yes indeed, Gaffer. I'm sure many remember your outbursts lamenting your bad luck stories.
"Aye, I'd like to apologise for those. I just got so frustrated at times. Although it still rankles when luck goes against me, hopefully I'm a lot better at accepting that it's just part and parcel of the game."
Good to hear, Gaffer! Do you feel you are still learning about the game?
"Definitely, every season something different happens that makes me reconsider my options. I remember Roy Rolsten (SPP) expressing his surprise when I stated that I ignored the tactical elements of the game because I was convinced that chance negated attempts to gain an advantage through tactical play. Now, with a lot more experience behind me, I realise that was a naive viewpoint and I now pay much more attention to the game's tactical options."
Apart from your frustrations with the MRP, have you enjoyed your tenure in 'The Manager' and what are your ambitions for the future?
"Although it may not have seemed it at times, I've thoroughly enjoyed my six seasons in 'The Manager' and hope that there will be many more to come. As for my ambitions for The Gers, I want them to be capable of competing for honours every season. I know it will be difficult but that is my main ambition for the club."
I'm sure The Bears will be glad to hear that. Time has run out so it only remains for me to thank The Gaffer for his insight once again.
Till next time..............Here's to the next 100 editions!

I suspect it's to force managers to plan ahead and manage their squad. If you can just downgrade at any time it means you can effectiveley ignore the 5 cap rule. If any of your MP players become an inconvenience to an auction purchase or trade you're planning you can just downgrade. No.......................
James White - May 13th 2018 15:33
Why can't they be downgraded in The Manager? Seems strange when it essentially makes your players value less.
Just want to understand the thinking behind the rule.

Since June 2001
The Manager started with in 2001 with just 8 teams. Every couple of season it grew slowly into the game it today. In 2015 the league saw it's first complete league expansion. At this time The Manager was renamed to Origin.
Since June 2015
The Evolution League joined the manager is 2015. It came together with mostly Olmec Coaches with a sprinkling of coaches returning to the game after a break. The Evolution League may prove to be one of the toughest competitions out there.
